A land surveyor is the first person on a project site, and the last person to leave. A civil engineer works with the data provided by the land surveyor, and provides design information to the surveyor and construction manager. The project manager coordinates, communicates, and structures the project.

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.

Project management processes fall into five groups:
1.Initiating
2.Planning
3.Executing
4.Monitoring and Controlling
5.Closing

Land Surveying

Land Surveying is one of the oldest professions in the world. The first land surveys occurred nearly 3,000 years ago, when Egyptian Surveyors subdivided the land around the Nile River and replaced the lot corner markers after the annual flooding of the Nile River.

Land Surveyors use measurement tools when creating new subdivisions of property, or when replacing the corners of existing subdivisions of property. Using these tools, surveyors create accurate maps, drawings, and descriptions of the land real property encompasses. Construction layout of designed real property improvements, and verifing a project was properly constructed is all part of the day-to-day function of the surveyor.

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering deals with the built environment. Often thought of as a successor specialization of land surveying in the United States, the practice of civil engineering has been around since the first shelters were built and the first crossings were constructed across rivers. Civil Engineering itself has many successor specializations. Structural Civil Engineers design buildings and bridges. Transportation Civil Engineers design roads, airports, and highways. Environmental Civil Engineers design water and wastewater treatment plants. Water Resources Civil Engineers design wastewater collection systems, stormwater management systems, and water distribution systems. Geotechnical Civil Engineers design foundations, slope stabilization and retaining walls, and landfills. Site Civil Engineers design subdivisions, land developments, and coordinate permitting activities.
